The Art of Leadership:

Speaker: Judy Ruhl, Fox Valley Technical College

This immersive 22-hour leadership class prepares fire officers and aspiring leaders to navigate the real-world challenges of supervising in the fire service. Participants will explore the fundamentals of effective supervision while gaining practical tools for leading different personalities, building trust, and fostering a positive, resilient crew culture.

The course blends group dialogue, hands-on activities, and scenario-based learning to help leaders communicate with impact, manage time and operational priorities, and delegate confidently. Participants will also practice giving and receiving constructive feedback—a critical skill in high-stakes, fast-paced environments.

A dedicated module on diversity equips leaders to understand and appreciate differences across culture, personality, and generations, improving collaboration and reducing conflict. The program concludes with the development of an individualized action plan to support ongoing leadership growth and on-shift application.
